Bachelor of Culinary Arts is a dual mode (face-to-face and open, distance and e-learning) taught undergraduate programme and runs for four (4) academic years – eight (8) semesters. The programme is designed to facilitate the academic, personal and professional development of the learner and to develop skilled professionals. The training approach and strategy link theory to culinary arts practices, whilst guaranteeing an appreciable depth of vocational and hands-on culinary arts skills. Teaching techniques involve classes, guest lecturers, field work, laboratory. as well as internship.

The programme aims to equip graduates with specialized professional skills and knowledge in culinary operations and management. Owing to its nature, the programmes is specifically aimed imparting working knowledge and skills in culinary techniques amongst culinary arts graduates. It will develop chefs with the right competencies required in the industry – chefs who blend and apply knowledge and skills in all areas of food production to provide quality products and services. The chefs produced from this programme will acquire appropriate ethical, professional values and attitudes consistent with the foodservice industry. Furthermore, the programme will equip students with entrepreneurial knowledge and skills to start and operate businesses successfully in the foodservice industry.

Career opportunities await graduates for positions in hotels, restaurants, food service companies, institutional food service, event catering companies, cruise ship industry, airline industry, and other culinary service related careers. Graduates of this programme can also pursue careers as consultants and entrepreneurs in the culinary field.

Entry requirements

This programme admits generic students with a Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or its equivalent obtained in not more than two sittings with an aggregate of not more than 30 points in at best six (6) subjects with at least a credit in English and Mathematics/Additional Mathematics.
